209.8-18 Corded Crinoline, c. 1845-1860
No dress is complete without a petticoat or series of petticoats. By the 1840s woman were wearing not just one or two petticoats but many to get the dome shape look of the period. While an exact date is not known for the creation of a corded petticoat, we do know that there were many different methods for stiffening petticoats not only to make them stand out, but also reduce the amount of petticoats needed beneath the dress.
The skirt of this corded petticoat has 13 rows of cords; the bottom cord is a double cord. The yoke is two piece and self lined. There are 3 buttons for back closure.
FIT:
This corded petticoat is worn over a shift and corset. A very light petticoat may have been worn over the corded petticoat to soften the cords. Petticoats or petticoats may have been worn underneath for warmth.
FABRIC:
The original fabric is a medium weight and finely woven white cotton. Cords are made from a 5/8” braided rope.
