Original garment c. 1810 from the Camden Archives in Camden, SC. Worn at a ball for Lafayette in 1825. Placed a museum form. Original sleeves have raw edges with signs that they were tacked up perhaps to create a pouf. Not known how long the original sleeves might have been. Archival string holds dress closed. Its neckline has been sewn in place and original ties have been removed.
First draft of muslin made out of sheer silk fits a Wolf form size 8. Muslin hand sewn. One side hangs beautifully, the other has a bubble. On the original one side pleat is tacked down….wonder if she had the same problem I did! Original sleeve ends were raw. Evidence that there was some form of pleating and tacking perhaps for the 1825 ball?
