This past weekend I had the pleasure of attending a regional CSA symposium in Richmond, VA. What a lovely way to spend four days with other folks who enjoy textiles and clothing as much as I do. Great conference with interesting papers, but the one of the highlights was visiting Hollywood Costume at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. Film and theatrical costumes always intrigue me as how they make regular clothing into an essential part of the character. Mind blowing was discovering the Claudette Colbert's divine Cleopatra dress (above left) is really green! (above right). Can't imagine designing costumes knowing they had to work in black and white but the actors had to shoot in color…oh wow!
